Just a quick one to start off with, here’s how I think Liverpool will shape up for the start of the 2017/2018 season, transfers and all.
GK: Mignolet – think he’s been solid for us during the latter half of the season and virtually dragged us into top four. When it comes to shot- stopping few in the Premier League are better.
RB: Clyne – don’t need to spend money on a right back even though I don’t particularly rate. Dependable in defence but offers nothing in attack apart from sideways/back passing. Doesn’t seem to get injured or need a break which is good given the packed schedule we’re gonna have.
CB: Matip – Probably the best piece of business we did last year. Will for sure retain his place in the starting line up.
CB: Lovren/someone who isn’t Van Dijk – I don’t understand the hate Lovren gets. Yes he makes mistakes but the blame for our leaky defence cannot rest on him alone. Throughout the course of last season it was different parts of our back four that were going through slumps. Although signing a CB is a must given that Sakho is going to go, I’d save the Van Dijk money and settle for a player like Koulibaly/Tah but one seem to be headed somewhere else and the other, staying at his respective club. Plus, I will always have a soft spot for Lovren after his goal against Dortmund in the Europa League. Go on Degsy.
LB: Mendy – The ideal fit for our style of play and a much needed player given the fact that Milner was playing his role. (Although he did so pretty well)
CM: Can/Hendo – Our midfield is arguably the most competitive and one of the best in the league as a whole. In the number 6 role I personally would prefer Can to Hendo–given that Can signs a contract extension–because he offers more going forward. Henderson can often fall into the same trap as Clyne with simple passes (mostly sideways or backwards)
CM: Lallana/Coutinho – Our two keys to unlocking any defence. Given the number of players we will have fighting for a position in our midfield I doubt both will start together all the time. Rotating the two is probably the best (League and Champions League) since we will be needing their specific skill sets.
CM: Keita – If we save money on VVD this should be a no brainer. He may be over priced but if Pogba is worth 89mil then Keita’s price is just the way in which the market is headed. I know he’s only really had one season but so has VVD and people have been clamouring for us to sign him. Keita fits the Klopp mould and could finally be the number 8 we have been missing since the great Stevie G graced Anfield (sorry hendo)
RW: Mane – Don’t need to say much about this boy.
LW: Salah – Him along side Mane is like having a couple of road-runners on our team. Although I’m still unsure of his finishing (given my scouting on youtube) his work rate and pace seem unmatchable.
ST: Firmino/Sturridge – I am against selling sturridge at all costs. He has bags of skills and needs someone to help him showcase it. A few seasons ago it was Suarez but with our current signings (hopefully more will be incoming) he can finally reach his past prime. This is only insofar as he can stay fit. Firmino is Klopp’s go-to central striker playing as a false nine. He’s the head of our press and with salah and keita behind him, the opposition won’t have breathing room. I don’t see us signing an Aubamayang or a Mbappe regardless of the rumours. I would however like to see a cheeky Sanchez bid put in. He would probably cost less then Mbappe or Auba and given Arsenal’s lack of spine I’m sure we would have a good shot.
Bench: Karius, Alexander-Arnold, a new CB, Milner, Oxlade-Chamberlain (I would love this signing. Great utility player and 25m for him would be a good piece of business. Gonna get his shirt if he does come), Solanke (looks like he has a great future. Get rid of Origi), Gini, Gelson Martins (a good back-up winger if we’re looking to rest salah/mane)
Youth: Ojo, Ejaria, Woodburn
Out the door: Sakho, Lucas, Stewart, Origi, Moreno and other fringe players who are wasting space and bankroll.
